Judging from the cover – 03/19/25 New release • aipt

Every week there’s a real horny that hits the stands of new comics. Readers often know exactly what they are most interested in (they have their pull lists sitting in the reliable hands of comic shops), but they are sometimes told about opposing that old trim and judging the book by its cover.

Some truly amazing cover art hits every week. These were the ones that caught Colin’s eye for the week of March 19, 2025.

Batman and Robin: Year 1 #6

Variants by Wes Craig

This Robin and Batman Beat M-Up is somehow a great spotlight on two faces, retreating by Robin’s blow. Craig captures the terrible half of his face in great cartoon detail – his wide open eyes, that face. The year-round series invites iconic and overstated cartoons from artists like Craig. The fatal class work of artists like Craig flaunts this kind of action (and Kaya flaunts the more fantastic world cartoon chops).

Catwoman #73

Variants by Frank Cho

This week’s classic, moving image of Catwoman from Frank Cho is leaning heavily towards a cat filled with Art Deco designs. Selina looks like a prototype here: this is a Catwoman, and it perfectly shows how she looks in modern times (regardless of how much costume changes are). This feels like it’s poster compatible.

#3 and below sneak up

Cover by Vanessa R. Del Rey

What a huge, terrifying pile of bones! I can’t tell you things about the creeping below – it’s not a series I followed (or really knew) – but this cover shows a scary horror book very clearly. These are the victims of something that will never be forgotten, and this is a lush dump.

Detective Comic #1095

Variations by Bruno Redondo

A more iconic Gotham piece. Bold, clean and practical use of a simple colour palette, this image brings a rather clear summary of Bruce Wayne and Batman.

From Alcatraz #1

Cover by Tyler Crook

The aesthetics of this classic film poster are killers – I certainly want this Criterion collection on my shelf. I love weathering (folding marks, dirt) that portray the vintage of our images and perhaps the era in which our stories take place.

Power Rangers Prime #5

Variant Cover by Bon Bernardo

Continuing with a series of lovely and iconic, color saturated ranger prime variant covers (one character/color of the whole series’ issues so far), Bernardo continues the fun-style trend where the characters’ simple color schemes bleed into the matching background. The Power Ranger is a pair of covers in this style.
