Heritage Auctions has launched a new auction with Albert Moy Art and Dynamite’s Nick Barucci, selling off dozens of original pieces of art by the late cartoonist and commercial artist John Cassaday and his friends. You can view the auction here.
The art will be sold to benefit Casaday’s partner Tara and sister Robyn, who along with Moy and Barucci helped curate the pieces for sale. The first batch of auctions also includes art donated by Casaday’s friends, including Jim Lee, Liam Sharp and Paul Pope.
“As many of you know, John Cassaday was one of my best friends,” Barucci said in a statement. “He was one of the greatest people I ever knew. Most everyone in the comics world knows of his creativity and unique artistry. Some of us were as lucky as I was to be friends with John, but he was a shining light not only as an artist but as a person. And for those who didn’t know him personally, he blessed the industry with his art, with the passion he brought to the comics he worked on, and his art will forever keep his flame alive.”
Heritage Auctions will give up some of the stock and charge a premium to buyers, but will give 100% of the “hammer price” to Cassaday’s family, Barucci said. This means that Heritage receives the full share from the purchaser and allows the family to keep a “share” of the final sale price.
The auction will also include a number of works selected from Casaday’s personal art collection, including a Marvel Fanfare cover by Michael Golden. New Frontier art by Darwyn Cooke, The Lone Ranger by Russ Heath, Marvel Fanfare by Kelly Gamill, and Captain America art by Gene Colan and Jack Kirby.
“The most historic and personal piece of art is the cover of Planetary #1,” Barucci explained. “This is the cover that John turned down all offers. John wanted to keep it because it was his first critically acclaimed series, his signature series. This took off for him, and if you’ve read the series, you’ll understand why. And it goes beyond the cover at auction to the cover of Planetary #1. Multiple covers and Planetary #1 There are also great Marvel, DC, Dynamite and more, from Captain America to The Amazing X-Men, from Action Comics to Legion Worlds, The Lone Ranger, Buck Rogers, and more.
