Joe Casey embarks on a space quest

Unlike the others, Dynamite Comics is preparing for the Space Conference. Space Ghost and Johnny Quest clash in Space Quest #1 scheduled for March, with writer Joe Casey leading the team. Artist Sebastian Piliz is in the interior and is hoping for covers by Mark Spears, Joshua Middleton, Derek Chu, Ben Oliver and Chad Hardin.

Beat chatted with Casey about upcoming quests.

Deanna Destito: What attracted you to this project?

Joe Casey: Well, except that dynamite backs Brink’s truck in my house, I was able to see the connection between the two concepts, with a basic and creative structure. It lent itself to some sort of crossover, so I thought maybe someone else would do it before beating me. As far as I know, it has never been done before. It’s not like this.

Destito: Were you a fan of Space Ghost and Jonny Quest?

Casey: Certainly, as long as they both leapt out of Doug Wilde and Alex Toss’ hearts. The fact that they were doing these animated series was a big deal historically because those guys are comic book royals. When those shows premiered, I wasn’t born. I’ve seen them on reruns for years and years. But they were the closest animation to the true aesthetics of comic book art. If you were a comic book fan, I was from a young age, so you recognized them the moment you saw them on your TV screen.

Destito: How does this fit into other Space Ghost series from Dynamite?

Casey: I think you can think of it as an event book. It’s not a traditional crossover between the two titles ongoing. It’s basically its own. That way we don’t interfere with what our regular monthly space ghost books are doing, and they don’t have to worry about what we are doing.

Destito: How have you worked with this creative team?

Casey: Sebastian Piriz and I are already in sync with Sybastian Piriz, a well-oiled machine that worked on the first five issues of Jonny Quest. So we rolled over this series with no issues at all and fired all the thrusters. In fact, just as Sebastian portrays the character from Johnny Quest, his Space Ghost is the best I’ve ever seen, with Alex Toss, Steve Rude and Alex Ross (characters) Drawing is equivalent to my personal favorite.

Destito: If you could add another universe character to this book, who and why?

Casey: God, no doubt. So it’s just as universe as it gets, right…?

Destito: Are there fan teasers?

Casey: All I meant was that I came up with a story that honors both concepts equally. But we just happened to use something that would make your life better. What can you ask anyone for?

Space Quest will debut on March 12th.
