It may not be in the form of pog, but Street Sharks actually make a comeback through comics. Delight in Vin Diesel!
With the mandatory Simpsons referenced out of the way, today’s IDW Publishing announced the release of the Street Sharks comic book, marking its first new release in over 20 years, introducing beloved 90s characters to an entirely new generation. This partnership between Mattel and IDW Publishing is not a complete surprise considering that IDW handles another Mattel property, Monster High. Furthermore, it is fairly common knowledge that the street sharks clearly took clues from the success of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, another successful asset of the era. Street sharks never achieved the height of TMNTs perfectly, but have become a cult favorite for many years. Honestly, it had its own killer theme song. It is still unclear whether fans can expect a crossover in the distant future.
The fifth miniseries, debuting this September, comes from the creative team of writer Stephanie Williams and artist Ariel Medel.
Here’s how IDW describes the miniseries:
Based on the classic animated series, upcoming comics will thrill readers as sharks protect nuclear fission cities from the threat of various gene slums, including nuclear and suspicious lobsters and squid, including the Diabolical Mud Scientist, in which sharks transform into musters who get in the way of nuclear and monster monsters. The comic offers everything fans loved from the hit shows and the tone of their era, from sharks to sharks riding cool motorcycles to eating lots of burgers and metal to defeat the bad guys while swimming through the concrete of the city.
Mattel’s Publishing Director Ryan Ferguson expressed great excitement about the partnership.
“Celebrating over 30 years of animated series, Street Shark has become a cult favorite, with fans whipping a bit to see the Ripstars, Jabs, Streaks and Big Slamoos of their brothers fighting crime.
David Jonas, CEO of IDW Media Holdings, added:
“True partnerships are based on truth, communication and flexibility. In the spirit of a Win-Win partnership, IDW and Mattel are pleased that IDW and Mattel are creatively and systematically placed, uniquely distributed, and ultimately distributed, focused, creatively and systematically, to please the fans of these iconic franchises.”
Series editor Nicolas Niño commented:
“It’s very exciting to introduce a new generation of fans to street sharks. Sharks symbolize the X-TREME sensibility of the adolescence of the 90s, which translates them naturally into cartoons. Stephanie and Ariel have put together a series that offers beautiful love letters to original comics that are sure to worship the old fans and new fans.
