We’re just weeks away from filmmakers and DC Studios co-head James Gunn to release the highly anticipated Superman film. To say that excitement and hype is seriously inspired at this point, it’s not an exaggeration. Certain aspects of the film are still kept under the rap, but most notably, new things seem to be revealed every day. Today, Gunn revealed on social media that actor Stephen Blackheart is playing the role of Sidney Happersen.
Author/artist John Byrne, especially Superman vol. 2#2, Sidney Happersen was Lexcorp’s top scientist scientist and loyal assistant to Lex Luther. Certainly a little known character among readers of non-common books, but this isn’t the first time in non-comic media that appeared in Suicide Squad, killing Justice League video games.
The character met his end mise with events in the “Fall of Metropolis” storyline. In his (although only) defense, he only did it after Superman persuaded Luthor to destroy the big city and be remembered as a mass murderer. It remains to be seen whether the characters will meet a similarly tragic ending in the film.
James Gunn fans are well aware, so he frequently works with past collaborators, and Superman is no exception. Blackehart appears in many Gunn projects, but it’s not surprising given that the two have a long history as screenwriters until the time of Gunn in Troma’s Troma and Tromeo and Gunn’s debut film Juliet. Other notable roles of Stephen Blackehart include Steemie Blueliver of Nowhere Dispatcher, whose name is clearly based, and Suicide Squad helicopter pilot Briscoe.
