Hellboy author Mike Mignola has created an entirely new fantasy world, and the first book set in that world is now on sale. Bowling with Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown is an anthology of myths and folklore. The story ranges from the bizarre adventures of a boy who becomes the wielder of an unexpectedly powerful hand of the dead, to the creation of worlds and gods in the eponymous Land Unknown, with a touch of whimsy (sometimes featuring an animal narrator). etc.), it has eerie content.
When the project was announced last year, Mignola said, “It all started with an Italian folk tale about a boy who goes bowling with a corpse.” He not only wanted to adapt it, but also wanted to “play fast and loose” in doing so. “So I created a whole new world,” he said. Bowling with Corpses hits comic stores today, and you can read an excerpt from Oona and the Devil (one of my favorite stories in the book) below.

Unsurprisingly, Mignola’s style lends itself well to the spooky folklore concept, and there are some truly stunning visuals that bring it all to life. A man chases a floating dagger through a forest dyed red. The newly transformed creature of the night spreads its wings for the first time. This book contains 8 stories across 112 pages (with more on the way!), so there’s a lot to dig into.
Mignola once again teamed up with Ben Stenbeck ( Our Bones Dust ) to create the Lands Unknown universe. This book is the first book to be published by Dark Horse Comics under Mignola’s new imprint, Curious Objects. “Bowling, Corpses, and Other Strange Stories in the Undiscovered Land” was written by Mignola, illustrated, colored by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Clem Robbins.
