Image Comics’ September sales include a mix of major series and new releases

A look at Image Comics’ self-reported top 10 comics and books for the past month shows that the company has a lot going on right now. While the top two publishers in the U.S. comics market essentially only have superhero books as their main “hits,” Image, the third largest comics publisher in the market, has a much wider range of major brands, licenses, and new material.

Robert Kirkman and David Finch’s new series “Skinbreaker” topped the single-issue sales chart, with “Skybound” accounting for about half of the top 10 overall. The Energon Universe is well known for having Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals in the top 10, but with an animated series in the works, it could get a little more excited in the near future.

Speaking of which, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast came in second place on the list. But it wasn’t all IP-driven. Exquisite Corpses #5 came in at number four, and rounding out the top ten was Everything Dead & Dying #1 by Tate Brombal and Jacob Phillips.

These numbers are interesting because, as alluded to above, Image’s diverse lineup of titles and talent better represents the overall breadth of American comics than most other major publishers. Familiar titles like Spawn and the Universal Monsters series also make the list, but it’s not just the 10 books that have a similar look and feel.

Book sales are even more variable. The original graphic novel, “The Spectators,” took the top spot, with collected editions making up most, but not all, of the rest of the list. The Pizza Witch and Gracie’s Ghost both appear, but they are also OGN. We also have trade collections for Exquisite Corpses, The Power Fantasy, Monstress, Invincible, and The Rocketfellers. The only two licensed books that make the list are GI Joe’s, a reminder of how big the Energon Universe has been to Skybound over the past few years.
