In case you didn’t know, today is Godzilla Day, celebrating the Japanese premiere of the first Godzilla movie in 1954. To celebrate this special, IDW has announced details for the first-ever Godzilla tabletop role-playing game, exclusively courtesy of GamesRadar.
More details in the official press release below:
Join G-Force and battle the greatest monsters of all time when IDW Games releases the first-ever Godzilla tabletop role-playing game! Launching next March on a Kickstarter campaign, Godzilla: Role-Playing Game reunites Warhammer gaming legends Jarvis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gab Thorpe for their first co-produced tabletop game. Godzilla places a team of players in the middle of a monster attack, using character sheets, collaboration, and playing cards as tools to protect humanity. This unique new game system uses a standard 52-card deck rather than dice. Fans can sign up here for more information on IDW games.
“When IDW first approached me about developing a role-playing game system, I was wary until I learned the game was based on their fantastic Godzilla comics. At that point, I immediately said, ‘Yes, please, let me be involved!’ Godzilla: The Rollplaying Game was the first time I had the opportunity to help design a full-fledged RPG, and it was a great experience to work with Gav, Mark, and the IDW creative team. “We’re really happy with how the game system turned out, especially with the use of cards instead of dice, which allowed us to incorporate a lot of novel game mechanics into the game system,” said co-creator Jarvis Johnson (Warhammer). “I’ve loved Godzilla since I was about 8 years old, and my mom took me to see Son of Godzilla. I loved it so much that I had my mom stay at the theater to see the movie twice! As you can imagine, working on a Godzilla role-playing game was a childhood dream come true for me.”
“Working on the Godzilla RPG is a dream come true, and the fact that we get to team up again with Jarvis Johnson and Gabe Thorpe feels like we’re getting the band back together!” said co-creator Mark A. Latham (Warhammer, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter). “It’s really exciting to have complete freedom to develop a new system. It’s a great fit for the G-Force era of Godzilla stories and truly encourages immersive storytelling and character-driven narratives. We think players and DMs alike will be very surprised by this game.”
“As an RPG fan for over 40 years, it’s an honor to be involved in such an iconic setting as Godzilla, one of the most famous characters in the world! It was a great experience working with Jarvis and Mark to bring the IDW Roleplaying System and Godzilla game ideas to life,” says co-creator Gav Thorpe (Warhammer, Inquisitor). Build something completely from scratch. Our goal is to create something fundamental that raises the bar for gaming systems, but more importantly, something that’s fun, intuitive, and rewards player teamwork. ”
The Godzilla RPG Kickstarter campaign is a 30-day pledge starting in early 2026 and includes a limited edition tier that is expected to be fulfilled by fall 2026.
IDW Games will be holding a playtest at PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia (November 21-23, 2025). Players who participate will receive exclusive player previews and merchandise. IDW Games also has a selection of Godzilla RPG merchandise available only at PAX, including beanies, playmats, notebooks, pins, koozies, playing cards, totes, and more.
Godzilla: The Rollplaying Game is the first new release from IDW Games in over five years, with other licensed properties planned to expand the game line. Recently, Hunters Entertainment announced the Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees – A Storytting Game Kickstarter campaign that will reach its original goal within 72 hours. Backers can still sign up for the campaign and its exclusive merchandise. IDW Games plans to continue developing future games through Kickstarter, giving loyal fans of the brand the chance to get something special.
