The creator of Ice Cream Man has redefined what the comic is, this time by completely abandoning the traditional form. This October, W. Maxwell Prince, Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Haloran are launching Ice Cream Man. The mortar coil shuffle is told not through staple pages but through custom designed decks of 55 playing cards.

Each card in Mortal Coil Shuffle contains a part of the story, or something strange. Some cards form a complete illustration, others influence spell-like stories, and some simply push the boundaries of what sequential art can do. The result is a completely unique, unique storytelling experience from image comics.

“We have over 44 issues, but we’re still crazy, doing something we’ve never seen before,” Morazzo said. Prince added that the project was inspired by childhood memories of learning card games from his German neighbor Inge, while recovering from Chicken Pox.

Mortal Coil Shuffle is a strictly limited release. There is no second printing, reprinting, or collection edition. When it disappeared, it disappeared.

The deck will be in the comic shop on Wednesday, October 1st. Get ready to play your hands in the strangest Ice Cream Man story.
