Giant-Size X-Men #2 is a story that works on multiple levels. Not only does he bring Kamala Khan back to the full circle, but he also finds that she’s back in Jersey City, so he literally explores what connects her with Legion. It’s not the power of their mutants, nor even the fact that they traveled through some of the biggest battles of the X-Men. I want to be accepted. As Legion wants to be the whole again, his destructive rampage goes wild over time, and Kamala is eager to fit not only with the other mutants but with her own family.
Such a layered story is courtesy of Jackson Lantz and Colin Kelly. Although the stakes are high, considering Legion absorbs a mass of power that doesn’t enhance his ability to bring his abilities closer to a godlike level, Kamala helps her in the form of the X-Men she has become friends with throughout history: Cyclops, Wolverine, Phoenix, Shadowcat, and Rogue. Lanzing and Kelly realize that even when these characters are separated by different titles (or, in Jean’s case, a huge range of time and space), they always have each other’s backs. The Rogue even has a series of dialogues that fully summarise what it means to be an X-Man. “When you are one of us, we will not disappoint you.”
Adam Kubert returns to draw a huge size X-Men #2, and fills it with a splash page after which the Splash page is rendered insanely. One of these splash pages features the boundaries of Legion from period to period before fighting Kamara, while another features the X-Men in all glory. But what really thrives for Kubert is to showcase the powers of each character. Legion literally bends the pages at his will, resulting in some eccentric and totally frightening images. With each Kamala stretex, she takes on a rubbery consistency. Kubert also knows how to draw images for maximum impact, whether the rogue is low orbit, Cyclops, or Wolverine pulls away from the movements of his combo.
Amazing
This isn’t too impressive without the colour of Laura Martin. Through the matter, Martin delivers a kaleidoscope of colour. Legion takes on the golden shade for his final form, Kamala’s mutant power renders himself as a violet, crystal shield, and X-Men’s outfits range from the classic blue and yellow of Wolverine to the fiery orange and black of Phoenix. To avoid losing, Clayton Cowles pushes his lettering to the limit, stretching out the balloons of the world as if they were Toffees, and adding inflections that fans have come to love, especially the Rogue Southern Deul.
Like other huge sized one-shots, there’s a backup story. This time, Jed Mackay and Cuff focus on Doug Ramsay’s transformation into revelation and the Raven and fate agreeing to. On the one hand, this serves as a prelude to the next era of the storyline of revelation. Meanwhile, MyStique’s final choice tastes nicely the choice that Kamala makes at the end of the main story. The huge sized X-Men #2 offers an emotional yet action-packed ending for its time-travel saga, reminding us that X-Men has become an incredible superhero team.
