Volume 3 of the Hobtown Mystery Stories series is released this week and The Beat has an exclusive sneak peek at ‘The Secret of the Saucer’.
Hobtown Mystery Stories from Oni Press is the brainchild of childhood friends author Chris Bertin, artist Alexander Forbes, and colorist Jason Fischer Kuhl. The series chronicles Hobtown (population: 2,006), which has faced unusual problems for centuries. Now a group of teenagers has come together to uncover the truth.

During election season in Hobtown, the lines between conspiracy and reality blur as new and old members of the Teen Detectives Club question Dana’s leadership and redirect the group’s attention to a discounted but pressing concern: Aliens! It’s among us too. On a grander scale, in the midst of the town’s intense mayoral race, the arrival of a flying saucer and the chaotic “Monkey King” pursued by the local knitting circle leave Hobtown’s teenage detectives wondering whether to come or go, literally tearing backward thinking through the threads of their friendship and grasp of the latest cases…

“Imagine if A24 remade Stranger Things and you understood the ambition of Chris Bertin and artist Alexander Forbes’ strange, surreal story,” said Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn. “It features multi-generational mysteries, supernatural mini-men, and a ragtag group of teenage detectives. I absolutely love this series. Hobtown Mystery Stories may be the best-kept secret in comics. These graphic novels are a personal obsession for me, and I’m sure you’ll soon be hooked on them, too.”
“The great thing about Hobtown Mystery Stories is that each volume reinforces and deepens the larger mythology of the series, while also serving as a haunting, stand-alone reading experience,” said Beth Parales, senior editor at Oni Press.
“Volume 1 is about missing persons cases, Volume 2 is about boarding school horror, and Volume 3 is about flying saucers. “Chris and Alex have created an incredibly rich world of quaint small-town intrigue, and it’s exactly the kind of book my younger, library-card-carrying self wanted to read as an adult. You can start the series with any volume you want, because you’ll always come back for the rest.”
Hobtown Mystery Stories, Vol. 3: The Secret of the Saucer will be available digitally and at local comic shops on November 25th.
