Hell is dark, so there is no flower

Writer: Jol Mishio
Artist: RUKA TODO
Publisher: YEN PRESS (Print & Digital)
Translation: Christina Rose
Lettering: Alexis Euckerman
Issuance date: January 21, 2025
Evaluation: Older teens
Genre: Manga, horror, crime, mystery

Imagine to spend your life with incredibly terrible abilities to see a specific person as a monster. Seiji tohno is burdened by this gift, and he never knows when the monster will appear. It is afraid of him every time, but Seimeijima, where Sage, a mysterious young man, meets by chance, believes that this ability is valuable and worth using.

Sage has lowered his luck when he meets Shiroshi. He dropped out of college, was alienated from his parents, could not find a job, and was homeless. One night, going down a dark alley, Sage discovers a huge European mansion in the middle. He is attracted to it, and the girl named Benico seems to be leading him.

OSHI explains his “gifts,” and if he can use the ability to identify people as a monster, he will provide his room and a board to his room and mansion.

The saint explains that the monsters seen by Sage are actually Yokai, and they appear to be a manifestation of human sins. OSHI’s Job as the son of the UNDER world king is to make a final decision on these sinners and send them to hell. He only needs Sage’s help to identify them.

Manga has a different arc named after Yokai, and has a week of monster flavor from the choice, but is not uncomfortable. Since each yokai is an individual case that needs to be explored, the fear of the manga is a mystery to determine what each person’s sin is and why they appeared as a specific Yokai.

Sometimes Sage sees them look like a monster. He also has a harmless appearance that wonders what his sin is. One of the most fun hell is dark without flowers. I’m trying to understand the truth. What did these people do? What is the meaning behind their Yokai?

If you are interested in Japanese folk tales, you will learn a lot from this manga. There are references to famous items in the story, such as “retaliation mirrors” and “lighting mirrors”. There are historical documents such as Illustrated Demon Horde’s Night Parade. And, of course, nods from the famous (like kappa) to the more unclear (Jatai).

In addition to history and folklore, Luka Todd’s illustration draws out the best of Yokai and renders them as disturbing creatures. Not all of them are scary, but I’m certainly anxious. The art will definitely set a manga tone. Except for something dark, mysterious, and unforgettable.

The storytelling of YORU MICHIO is top notch. Pacing is balanced, sometimes active, if you try to guess what will happen, you will keep you at the end of the seat. MICHIO is unique, and each character clearly has its own voice and style. Sage is emotional, saints are cool, and they play with each other.

Each “client” that comes to see SHIROSHI is clear, and there is a different sin from various problems. It is exciting to see what YOKAI appears as follows.

The manga introduces the new major characters toward the end and ends with the second arc Cliff Hanger. The reader must wait until May 27, 2025 to get the next volume of the manga, but it is worth it.

Hell is dark, and flowers are based on a novel with the same name. This is also written by YORU MICHIO. Two volumes of two volumes from YEN PRESS can be used, and the third will appear on May 13, 2025. Hell is dark, and the volume 1 without flowers can be obtained from various retailers in digital and physical formats, including YEN PRESS. 。
