Oni Press is collaborating with Ravi Teixeira (a quick and easy guide to coming out) with the new graphic novel Heaven, West Virginia.
The story, described as a love letter to find love when you are denied, follows Lamont as he adapts to his new life in a small town, facing growing darkness. That darkness comes in the form of a mysterious beast that casts Lamont’s life into chaos as he tries to find comfort.
When Lamont arrives in the heavens of the small Appalachian town of West Virginia, the lush landscape feels stubbornly at odds with the raucous unrest that comes to define his inner life. Living there, you should learn the art of foraging and making tea from his kind of stoic aunt Latoya. But in the shadows of the heavenly forest, Lamont sees a dark, giant figure, long, sparkling teeth, and stabbing red eyes. It seems no one is looking at this beast. . . Not his aunt, but a coyote, a handsome cowboy, his gentle voice evokes the electric fragrance of Latoya’s brewery. It feels impossible to escape the hunger pursuit with that greed, and Lamont must face more than the darkness of the forest in order to do so.
Beat is pleased to give readers their first look with artwork from Heaven, West Virginia and Teisheira. Check out the main cover of the graphic novel and preview page below.
Teisheira said that Lamont’s character has something to do with anyone who struggles to love someone they couldn’t.
“Lamont is me, Lamont is you, Lamont is my father and his father, who is struggling to lose someone who cannot love and cannot love them,” said cartoonist Rabbi Teisheira. “Heaven, West Virginia is my love letter to find love when you are denied it and is haunted by your past.
Oni Press’ West Virginia Heaven will arrive at bookstores and comic bookstores on November 11th, 2025.
