Ghost of Tsushima, the 2020 PlayStation hit, is getting a sequel featuring a new protagonist, era and landscapes. Ghost of Yōtei will launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
“Ghost of Mt. Yotei” stars Atsu, a new ghost who journeys to the foot of Mt. Yotei in Ezo (present-day Hokkaido) in 1603. This means that the sequel is set 300 years after the events of Tsushima, which focused on the Mongol invasion of the region. In 1603, Mt. Yotei is not under Japanese control, and the debut trailer shows vast, untouched grasslands, snow-covered forests, sun-drenched ridges dotted with wildflowers, and strong winds blowing through each scene. The music in the trailer has a distinct cowboy overtone, especially in the scene where Atsu interacts with wild horses. She also encounters wolves, which is lovely.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch said that Mount Yotei was not home to organised samurai clans like Tsushima, and this formed the basis for the sequel’s new original story.
This is Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for the PS5.
“You’ll experience expansive views into the environments, all-new skies featuring twinkling stars and the Northern Lights, and even more realistic wind movement on grass and plants, with more refinements to come,” said Sucker Punch communications manager Andrew Goldfarb. “The new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”
