Redcoat, a Ghost Machine/Image Comics title by Geoff Johns and Brian Hitch, is in development as a feature film through Atlas Entertainment, one of the production companies behind Wonder Woman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Longtime DC producer Charles Roven will produce the film for Atlas, with Johns on board to write the script based on Johns and Hitch’s story. All of Ghost Machine’s employees have some ownership in the intellectual property, suggesting that Brad Anderson, Andrew Curry, and Rob Lee are likely involved in the game.
“Every great series is built on great characters, and Simon Pure on Redcoat is one of them,” Atlas’ Alex Gartner, who first reported the deal, told Deadline. “Funny, charismatic, and a lovable villain, he is a great addition to the IP.”
“I have known Geoff Johns for many years and in some cases have had a front row seat to watch his incredible work in the DC universe,” Roven added. “Johns and Hitch have made a great collaboration as the writers and illustrators of the best-selling, fan-favorite Redcoat comics. Redcoat is innovative comic material that is ripe for attention.”
The story centers on Simon, a British deserter from the American Revolutionary War. Simon is given the gift of immortality and travels through history in an attempt to save America from a vast conspiracy, interacting with key historical figures from the 1700s to the present day.
“Simon, a British redhead and all-around scoundrel, mysteriously became immortal in 1776 after a run-in with a secret society known as the Founding Fathers, which included George Washington, John Hancock, and many other notable leaders of the American Revolution.”Since that fateful day, Simon has lived a life of adventure and greed, rubbing elbows (and sometimes fists) with many people. Some of history’s most famous figures, including his nemesis Benedict Arnold, Albert Einstein, and Annie Oakley, all agree: They never want to see him again! But what are the true origins and scope of Simon’s power, and how has it secretly shaped America and the world?
