It’s not an exaggeration to say that it all came out last year with the release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles book, which IDW rebooted, resulting in huge sales of 300,000 copies. In December, the new creative team of Jean Luenyan and artist Freddie E. Williams II will take over the book at TMNT #13. Given the amount of IDWs promoting this new era, including blind bag variant promotion, it would not be surprising if TMNT #13 surpassed sales in the first issue.
In fact, in New York Comics, the Ashkamp preview for TMNT #13 will be available to fans of IDW booth (#4451) on a first-come, first-served basis. When I say this new creative team is cooking something special, accessing the advanced preview of TMNT #13 Ashcan and trusting me, Beat was lucky.
Please don’t get me wrong. I think author Jason Aaron and his various artistic collaborators have done an incredible job renewing TMNT books. For one thing, Aaron created a self-contained story that could be accessed by potential new readers while still taking place in the continuity of IDW’s larger TMNT universe. That being said, the TMNT#13 Ashcan preview suggests that it will incorporate more continuity in the TMNT universe. For example, Xiang Fei Tong, the leader of the Ghost Boys of the Chinatown Gang, makes a brief appearance. Readers who are catching up to IDW’s TMNT Tie-in book are likely to know that she was recently seen in a recent issue that she recently forged an alliance with Dog Star Clan, a piece of Foot Clan.
Spanning lines of continuity is difficult, especially in cartoons, in shared universes. The approach IDW takes with TMNT seems very similar to Peacemaker in that it doesn’t undermine the storytelling experience by missing out on other DC Studios projects. However, fans will still get the kick from seeing the “toys” coming out of the toy chest.
In an interview, Jan says Donatello is his favorite member of TMNT. The previous run certainly passed Donnie through quite a few candles, resulting in the wrinkled gaunt look that arose from his time as a caged mutant slave. So it’s a bit more comforting to see him return to his old abundance of relief.
Of course, a big selling point for the series is the introduction to a major new villain called Ujigami. Naturally, IDW brings details closer to the best. There’s not much to be revealed from the Ashcan preview. Another reason fans will get their own copy when TMNT #13 goes on sale on December 10th, 2025!
