So, by addressing this week’s big book, I want to start this list of top comics to buy on September 17th. The first Marvel Deadpool Batman #1 in the new Marvel/DC crossover. It will definitely be the best selling book of the week, but I think most buyers already know if they’ll buy it or not. So, my list below shows you five other recommendations for this week, as well as a set of regular release lists.
but also! Before you go, if you enjoy my recommendations… I would like to let you know that I wrote Grindhouse Texas Horror Comics! And it lives on Kickstarter as of today. Feel free to check out Valley #1…and enjoy it!
Top Comics to Buy September 17th
Batman: Second Night #1
Author: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Mike Perkins
Colorist: Microphone Spicer
Letter: Simon Bowland
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
The year is 1940. Most of the Western world is caught up in a war with fascist regimes where marches across Europe show no signs of defeat. As the death of the Earth War is upon us, it is a time of fear and delusion for those living in Gotham. It’s only been a few months since the city was rescued from undead monsters by a masked vigilante known as Batman, but the vicious murderers are plagued by murders that have led the city to its splitting ground. The corpses appear in a theatrically scary way… everything is staged with Killer’s Calling Card: Hangman’s Rope.
Why Cool: As I wrote on this site, I loved the first series of this manga, Batman: First Night. And this very long first issue is quickly taken from where it left off, pushing into new territory, primarily through new villains. But I would like to return to Mikes Perkins and Spicer’s art again and offer a perfect, beautiful 1940s Gotham City.
Price: $6.99
It’s good to die #1
Co-writer/artist/letter: David Rafam
Co-author: Mariarafam
Colorist: Dee Cunniffe
Publisher: Image Comic – Skybound
Emily Bridge has always linked the citizens of Port Lyndon to hope and opportunity. But when one man shocks to burn himself, the bridge now brings something else to the town – a certain death.
As the town’s chief corporation, sheriff David Calhoun needs to stay one step ahead of the army trying to pull his town away. If he has the opportunity to reveal the truth, he must expose generations of secrets while overtaking death itself.
Why it’s cool: It’s a good week for a meaty, very long comic, and that’s what we’re coming here with Dead #1, the latest project of The Laphams, the greatest crime comic creator of all time. I’ll be reviewing this entirely in my comic review column tomorrow, Wednesday, but I just say this: Stray Bullets is one of my favorite comics, so I had high expectations for this – I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Price: $7.99
aura! #2
Author: John Leeds
Artist: Sally Cantirino
Colorist: Dearbhla Kelly
Letter: Lucas Gattoni
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
Aura reluctantly agreed to lunch with Gwyn, the friendly manager of her favorite local bookstore that she’s crushed. Gwyn makes a cheesy joke, dances badly, worrying about lack of embarrassment. But Aura faces challenges as the initial awkwardness gives way to a fun afternoon. How does she actually deal with the guy she likes?
Why It’s Cool: If you missed any of my previous recommendations for this comic in any way, then know that it’s a hybrid horror dating comic with a completely perfect creative team. And in this second issue you get everything that made the first problem great, along with new complications for Reed. aura! #2 was a simple one for this top comic to buy on the September 17th list.
Price: $4.99
Season #8
Author: Rick Remender
Artist: Paul Azaceta
Colorist: Matheus Lopes
Letter: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – A Giant Generator
Spring unlocks weapons that may eventually turn the tide, but saving the world means teaming up with the last person she wants on her side. Meanwhile, Winter is celebrated with her work and fascinated by a fantasy in which the pain has faded… making sacrifices that are not visible until it’s too late.
Why Cool: As I’ve written several times in this space at this point, there’s no other comic with a seasonal, sometimes Johnny, character-driven, vague, pastel circus horror blasts. And it just keeps getting better.
Price: $3.99
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey Jones #1
Author: Alex Paknadel
Artist: Amancay Nahuelpan
Colorist: Luis Antonio Delgado
Letters and Designers: Darran Robinson
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Casey Jones is shot by Da Hale, he wakes up and he has a second chance in his life. Instead of sniffing things slowly and smelling flowers, he is the first to jump into the action. Casey is hitting the streets and doing everything he can to protect the people of New York City, but the people closest to him think he’s pushing too hard. April O’Neill and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, especially Casey’s closest friend Raphael, are concerned. Things only get worse as the new York City begins to change shape and the new villain threatens everything Casey believes.
Why Cool: I wrote this one sparkle, a complete review when I needed to pre-order Wednesday’s comic review column. You can read this here. But essentially, I think it’s a story that worked, and it’s also a great Casey Jones comic and the perfect building block for the Full Turtles Line. Don’t miss it.
