Full trailer for Marvel’s Wonder Man finally reveals the character’s powers

With less than a month until Disney+ launches, Marvel Television has released the full trailer for Wonder Man, the upcoming superhero action/comedy starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) and Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3). In the series, Mateen plays Simon Williams, an actor who learns he has superpowers when he is cast in the film Wonder Man (played by Superman’s Zlatko Buric), directed by acclaimed director von Kovac.

Williams will have a buddy comedy relationship with Trevor Slattery, the actor who posed as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. The trailer, along with a guest appearance from Damage Control, reveals the gradual manifestation of Simon’s powers and the fact that they won’t remain secret for long.

The project tackles the concept of “superhero fatigue” head-on, and Marvel hopes it can pre-emptively alleviate some of the criticism.

The meta-commentary behind the show wasn’t subtle. Back in July, Mateen, who plays Simon Williams, gave an interview on the Fantastic Four: First Steps red carpet and talked about the excitement of bringing Wonder Man to life.

“You know, I’m a big Wonder Man fan and I grew up a big comic book fan. In fact, when I was little, that was the first movie I saw in the theater with my dad,” said Mateen, who plays Williams. “And you know, I walked out of the theater that day wanting to be a superhero. So this is great and this is a beautiful full-circle feeling for me.”

Daniel Destin Cretton is the creator of Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, and is showrunning Wonder Man for Marvel Studios and Disney+. Marvel has kept Cretton busy, as he is also responsible for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

There’s no word yet on whether Simon Williams will be appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, but the film has also ramped up its promotional campaign, including a teaser attached to prints of Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters. The initial casting announcement for Doomsday was pretty impressive, but some key cast members were left out, including Chris Evans, whose return was later confirmed in a teaser. Don’t be too surprised if Wonder Man ends up with the tag “Simon Williams returns in Avengers: Doomsday.”

Wonder Man comes to Disney+ on January 27th.
