Via People magazine, First Second Books has announced As I Dream of You, a romantic and supernatural graphic novel by filmmaker Jennifer Lee (Frozen) and artist Luen Pham (Chinese New Year Love Story). Falling in love is supposed to hurt. That’s what Franny and Sam, cynical teenagers who grew up hearing stories of heartbreak and loss, have come to understand. But when they fall in love with each other, they find out that the reality of love is completely different. It’s inspiring, comprehensive, and simple. Their love can overcome anything, perhaps even death. But Franny and Sam’s quest to be together at all costs soon blurs the line between reality and fantasy, and their shared dream threatens to turn into a nightmare.
The book is the first graphic novel by Lee, 54, who co-wrote and co-directed Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019) with Chris Buck, and served as chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios from 2018 to 2024. In a statement to People magazine, she described the book as “the most personal story I’ve written, inspired by my own experiences as a young woman devastated by the power of love and the shock of loss.” I wanted the journey of As I Dream of You to be as visceral and real as every moment felt. ”
Pham, 52, added: “When the script for ‘As You Dreamed’ appeared on my desk, I didn’t know what to expect. A romance? A supernatural thriller? A coming-of-age story? A heart-wrenching story? All of these and more.” To learn more about the duo’s work and get your first look at Pham’s interior art, read this article. The book will be Lee’s first screenwriting credit since “Wish” (2023) and the last before “Frozen 3” (scheduled for release on November 24, 2027), but it will be Pham’s first since winning two Eisner Awards for “A Lunar New Year” (2024).
As I Dream of You will be released in paperback and hardcover on May 5, 2026, with 352 pages and retailing for $19.99 and $27.99, respectively. You can pre-order it now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and more.
