23rd Cent Books has released an updated paperback edition of the Free Speech Handbook. This has released a practical framework for understanding freedom of speech, written by First Amendment Attorney Ian Rosenberg and drawn by Eisner nominated artist Mike Cavalaro. In time for release, the beat has an exclusive first look.

The Free Speech Handbook examines 10 important Supreme Court cases and explains how they affect current affairs.

Here’s the complete explanation:

In the Free Speech Handbook, Ian Rosenberg and Mike Cavalaro brilliantly trace this tumultuous history in ten inventive Supreme Court cases similar to recent controversies. Rosenberg’s candid language, combined with Cavalla’s bold and bright art, creates an accessible and engaging crash course on the meaning, scope and limitations of free speech protection. When it first published in 2021, Publishers Weekly said of the book:

Below is Tinkerv. See excerpts from DesMoines’ book and how it continues to affect students’ speech rights.

“Efforts to curb student protests are currently wiping out the country, so now is the ideal time to look back at the story of the first Supreme Court case and allow the First Amendment to protect student speeches,” Rosenberg said.

“Tinkerv. In DesMoines, a 13-year-old student named Mary Beth Tinker bravely wore a black armband to school to protest the Vietnam War.

“In this new era of national chaos over the issue of freedom of speech, it is not surprising at times that the basis for the First Amendment under our feet feels like we are changing in ways that we cannot predict,” he continued. “To combat this uncertainty, the Free Speech Handbook provides a stabilizing framework for understanding our freedom of speech, even in times of uncertainty. Unless we truly know our right to free speech as an American, it is impossible to fully utilize and defend ourselves when we are threatened.”

Free Speech Handbooks are available everywhere Books are for sale.
