In recent years, legendary comic creator Frank Miller has sparked debate over his new art style, featuring many variant covers. No matter your opinion, I will not deny that it stands out from other covers of comic books. Today, Image Comic announced that it will offer two jaw drop variants, rather than one. In September this year, it was announced that it will cover the curse of Charley Johnson #3.
Details of the full press release below:
This September, Shirley Johnson #3 Curse offers a groundbreaking moment in the spawn universe, featuring two jaw-dropping variant covers by cartoon legend Frank Miller.
The issues include the latest variant of Miller and a rare joint edition with McFarlane, who has collaborated on cover art for the first time since Wizard Magazine #32 in 1994, as well as the first ever cover collaboration within Spawn Universe.
Miller’s final artistic contribution to spawn came in 2000 on the cover of Spawn #100. Twenty-five years later, he returned with a bold new variant cover, offering both pencil and ink, finishing it with Alex Sinclair colours. But the real collector’s gem is a black and white variant of the 1:25 copy incentive, featuring the same mirror pencil, reimagined by MacFarlane himself, creating an unusual fusion of the two most influential voices in modern comics.
“One of the great joys of being in the comic book industry is getting the opportunity to work with our friends. It’s always fun, and when that friend is also an insanely talented Frank Miller, it’s just that fun increase,” MacFarlane said. “Frank made a historic mark in our industry and was able to work with him again decades later… I feel like a whimsical child again. And for those who haven’t yet had the chance to read Shelley Johnson’s Curse Issues, I think you’re missing out on the unique evil comic experiences from Daniel and Jonathan.”
Miller added: “Todd and I went into the comics for the exact same reasons. The pure joy of making them. We can do it together once in a while. We seem to be a few kids.”
The Curse of Shirley Johnson #3 also boasts variant covers from the series’ core creative team (artist Jonathan Grapion and author/artist Daniel Henriquez). Along with Colorist FCO Plascencia and Letterer and World Design, they continue to move the series forward, with Henriques providing intense storytelling and detailed linework for Glapion, and Inking brings the world to life.
“I still feel that it’s unrealistic to have Frank Miller on the cover of our book. I’ll then ask Frank Miller and Todd MacFarlane to join us in the same work. “I’ve admired these gentlemen for the rest of my life, and their support has been one of the highlights of my career.”
Glapion repeated the feelings.
In this chapter, Shirley and the stranger make it through the latest trial, but not without consequences. The events they endure continue to focus on weight, despite the fact that far-flung camps offer safety potential. Meanwhile, something ancient begins to stir, and what falls from the sky may bring something other than peace. When heaven arrives and Beliaphon makes his move, the long-standing truth is revealed, refusing to remain hidden.
The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #3 is available on Comic Book Shops on Wednesday, September 17th.
