Magnetic Press has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Freaks’ Squeele, a seven-volume action-adventure series inspired by Florent Madoux’s comics. Today, The Beat is proud to share an exclusive preview of Volume 1.
Squeal by Freaks is a series that debuted in France in 2008 with Ankama Edition and is highly acclaimed all over the world. Magnetic Press’s Kickstarter launch for the series marks its U.S. debut.
The synopsis from the publisher is as follows.
In Squealle the Freaks, the world is inhabited by demons, werewolves, gods, and mutants, many of whom are descendants of ancient mythical beings, and superheroes are a regulated profession similar to lawyers and doctors. Aspiring heroes must attend an accredited university, where they learn combat and ethics, and compete in duels and tournaments, often with deadly consequences. These events are broadcast and monetized, turning heroic acts into spectacle. The series follows three new students named Chance, Li Xiong Mao, and Shadow as they must navigate these trials and tribulations while uncovering conspiracies, surviving sabotage, and managing the popularity of their identities.

“Whether you’re interested in paranormal school dramas and genre-defying art, or just want to watch a werewolf battle a bear for dormitory territory, Squeal the Freaks delivers with claws, swords, and irony,” said Mike Kennedy, publisher of Magnetic Press. “Think of Jujutsu Kaisen meets the X-Men via Scott Pilgrim, with elements of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and plenty of French irreverence thrown in.”
He continued: “The world of Squeal in Freaks is a critique of power structures disguised as superhero fun, with history, trauma and rebellion imbued in every sword swing, spell and wry irony. This is deeply addictive storytelling.”
Freaks’ Squeele Kickstarter campaign includes all seven hardcover volumes and a limited edition “Dorm Footlocker” storage box. The campaign is currently underway.
