2024 has truly been a great year for horror. Whether it’s watching a movie on the big screen or grabbing the latest release from your comic book shelf, this year has brought scares left and right. Now, writer David M. Booher, along with artist Drew Zucker, is continuing that trend with the terrifying tale “The Feeding,” a charming new one-shot from Image Comics.

The story revolves around Nolan Ward, an office worker trying to escape his dark past. Instead of dealing with his demons through therapy, he dives headlong into drugs, alcohol, day trading, and women. But just when Nolan thought he was finally able to escape his nightmare life, it came back to him in the form of a painting called The Feeding. Also, I guess I’m hungry. This is a twisted, messed up journey of a man trying to get over his past, but the past doesn’t just go away.

What I liked most about The Feeding was that it gave it that old-school Tales from the Crypt or Tales from the Darkside vibe, the perfect mix of spooky and macabre. That’s it. Plus, I love how emotionally drawn David M. Booher is to Nolan Ward. Nolan isn’t exactly a saint. He does some crazy things like sleeping with women and locking them out of the lobby of his building. But when Booher tells Nolan his messed up backstory, you can’t help but root for him. And when the horrors of Nolan’s past come knocking on his door, it’s a twisted mindfuck that just keeps turning the pages.

The artwork in The Feeding matches the story and tone perfectly. You can immediately tell what kind of person Nolan is by looking at the way Drew Zucker draws him. Three-piece suits, slicked-back hair, lounging with drinks at fancy restaurants, and abusing women. And the way Zucker moves back and forth between backstory and present day is seamless. Every angle, panel, and reveal shows Zucker is truly a master of his craft. His footage is so good that I’m torn between what I like better: the backstory or Nolan’s current meltdown as he tries to keep his head from exploding.

The Feeding is, just for fun, an absolute killer. The storytelling is very smooth, the transitions are great, and the journey it takes you on is amazing. It has everything you want from a horror manga, including creepy moments and big reveals. If you like horror movies and scary comics, The Feeding is for you.

“The Feeding” #1 Review

Feeding #1

Feeding, pun intended, is just a killer. The storytelling is very smooth, the transitions are great, and the journey it takes you on is amazing. It has everything you want from a horror manga, including creepy moments and big reveals. If you like horror movies and scary comics, The Feeding is for you.

The tone of the artwork and the story match perfectly.

It moves perfectly between present and past stories.

Solid, concise writing and creep elements.
