On the eve of its 15th anniversary, Fanbase Press has announced its first-ever Kickstarter campaign for a deluxe hardcover edition of Ripple Effect, winner of the 2023 Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics and the 25th Annual ForeAwards Indie Book of the Year Award for Graphic Novel and Comics.
Created, written and colored by Jordan Hart, with art by Bruno Tirol, flats by Shane Kadlesic, letters by Oceano Lunsford, cover illustrations by Justin C. Harder and a foreword by Matthew Noé, Ripple Effect follows an invincible superhero who battles acute type 1 diabetes and a defective pancreas that requires daily monitoring and treatment. It’s rare for a hero to have some kind of disability or illness, but it’s even more so when an invisible disability is at the center of the story. Ripple Effect is inspired by Hart’s real-life experience with thrombosis, a chronic blood-clotting disorder.
” Ripple Effect was created to remind people with invisible disabilities and their loved ones that they are not alone, that they are unique and special,” Hart said. “It makes me so happy when readers say to me, ‘I’ve been waiting so long for someone like me to be a superhero.’ Seeing the impact this story has had on other people with invisible disabilities has been a highlight of my career, and I hope the deluxe edition will help extend that impact even further.”
Ripple Effects: The Deluxe Edition includes a new foreword by Gail Simone, a study guide by Tim Smith and Creators, Assemble!, “Invisible Ripples” essays written by people with invisible disabilities or illnesses who relate to the events of the story, and an art gallery pairing young artists with invisible disabilities or illnesses with established comics artists such as Manuel Martinez, Liana Kangas, Don Aguilo, and Ray Anthony Height.
“For nearly 15 years, Fanbase Press has had the honor of celebrating creators and stories across media and highlighting the important role they play in our lives,” said Barbra Dillon, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Fanbase Press. “With this expanded edition, we hope to share Ripple Effects’ incredible and impactful story with even more readers, libraries, and schools around the world.”
Bryant Dillon, co-founder and president of Fanbase Press, added: “What sets this series apart is its positive, human-centered portrayal of life with a chronic illness, complete with superhuman abilities. But Ripple Effect is not just the story of a character with an incurable disease; it’s also a thrilling, down-to-earth superhero tale that touches on the challenges of work-life balance, the class struggle and economic inequality experienced by many in our country, and the desire to help others during difficult times. Working with Jordan to create an expanded version of such a personal tale that has resonated with so many readers is a perfect example of the modern, meaningful superhero stories we publish at Fanbase Press.”
