Elijah Wood once spoke with the ghosts of the Stanley Hotel and other stories of high oddity

Actor Elijah Wood and director Daniel Noah were at a film festival held in Colorado about a decade ago. We stayed at the infamous untwilight Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.

After several failed attempts to communicate with the paranormal, something shocking happened – it started to work. And before they knew it, they were communicating with the young girl. They asked her if there was anything she wanted to do, and she spelled out one word: Follow W. She gave them a number 324.

After all, many guests document their supernatural experiences at the hotel (catalogging them with binders or did it at the time anyway). All of this story was shared Saturday by Wood and Noah on the Spectrevision Radio Live Panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

The panel was a collaboration between Noah and Wood’s podcast, Spectrevision and Comics Publisher Oni Press. And during that time they focused mainly on other upcoming team-ups, relatively clear new comic series, high oddity (details you can find here). Simply put, its issue 5 series is based on Noah’s own transformative journey from skeptic to follower, featuring an inclusive narrative with another team of writers and artists working on each issue.

However, on the panel, Wood and Noah were not the only ones who shared stories about the inexplicable and strange things. They were joined on stage by two writers from the new book, Christopher Cantwell and Chris Condon. Everyone shared some insights about their relationship with the inexplicable ones.

However, rather ambitious books’ photographs that do not follow typical story structures are the claims that they do not understand more than think about the world, providing insights that provide a connection to reality.

“The comics don’t have an answer,” Condon said. “There’s no explanation in the comic, but (the main character) has gone through something and is experiencing it with him.”

Another very interesting feature of the high oddity is that it includes a set of non-fiction essays on various phenomena by Jim Perry, who works with Wood and Noah on the podcast.

This book is also at an interesting time in Oni Press. This has released some of my favorite original comics this year. It really stands out among regular comic publishers. They generally seem to be much more interested in the second half of known products and approved materials.

High Strangeness, however, is a series of individual chapters divided into different creative teams, seeking to find the truth about the indescribable experiences of working with the singular.

When asked about the approach that Oni editors are working with books and authors, Pallares said, “It’s about storytelling that allows people to become strange and explore the strangeness.”

High Strangerness #1 by Condon, Noah and artist Dave Chisholm (with jock cover) is scheduled for October 8th.

Keep an eye out for more coverage from SDCC ’25.
