Absolute Batman #1 has a final order deadline next Monday, and DC is turning to a tried-and-true social media campaign to generate buzz. Heaps of buzz, great buzz.
When a film is screened for critics, there’s usually a social media embargo and at a certain time, Twitter is flooded with passionate opinions about whether it’s “Another big win for Marvel!”, though most tend to lean towards the big win side.
Absolute Batman #1 is incredibly important to the fate of DC Comics and the All In relaunch, or initiative, or whatever you want to call it, as it kicks off the long-awaited “Alternate DC Universe” due to arrive in October, so curiosity is running high.
So DC sent out PDFs of Absolute Batman #1 by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta to critics, retailers, and an influencer or two.
And the passionate comments are pouring in!
Remember, even if the film itself is questionable, the response to early screenings is usually 75% positive rave reviews because no one wants to be taken off the screening list and there’s a certain excitement that comes with early screenings. There’s also the 25% of people who slam the film because they’re fearless or just drunk haters. My own glowing opinion of Twixxer will often come across as lukewarm… but sometimes it can be genuinely moving.
All of these AbBat #1 hot takes are very positive because my fellow comic book community is so positive and supportive. I can’t imagine any working comic book professional would take a preview of Absolute Batman #1 from Scott Snyder and then criticize it on Twitter. It’s not over yet. It’s best to keep quiet and save your honest feelings for BarCon.
Actually, these praises may be well founded. I’ve read Absolute Batman #1 myself, and it’s a very good comic book, so it’s not hard to find things to praise. That’s all for now. But let’s see what others have to say.
Dan Mora: I read Absolute Batman #1 and the reinterpretation of Mythos is sooooo cool, so cool that I had to draw a character sketch of this new version.
The final order deadline is this Monday, September 16th, so don’t miss out!
Gail Simone: As you all know, I never promote anything unless I really love it.
So I got to read a preview copy of ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 by @Ssnyder1835 and Nick Dragotta.
Key elements of my unbiased, carefully considered review include:
Wow, how interesting.
COMIC COUPLES COUNSELING: Just finished reading the preview of ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 by @Ssnyder1835 and Nick Dragotta. As expected, this comic is awesome. Dragotta’s designs are wicked exciting, and his acting and action surpass them. This Batman is a beast. Familiar, yet new. Love, love, love this.

Jackson Lansing: I just read ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1. @Ssnyder1835 and Dragotta don’t miss a single frame. It’s a vibrant, heart-pounding, imaginative comic with a fully realized Batman as a working-class punk icon. I’m simply amazed. Pre-order this book and help get it published by 1 million copies.
Chris Condon: @Ssnyder1835, I just read the preview of ABSOLUTE BATMAN by Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin and Clayton Cowles. It’s a smart, cool, thrilling and fun expansion of the Batman mythos like nothing we’ve seen before. It’s new and different, but still totally Batman. It’s got a TDKR vibe. I love it.
Tom Taylor: I had a chance to read a preview of #AbsoluteBatman #1. @Ssnyder1835, Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin have put together something damn cool. Don’t miss it.
Kyle Starks: @DCOfficial I had a chance to read @Ssnyder1835’s ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 (I’m a very special and important person). Just letting you all know that FOC will be happening next Monday. Very interesting and surprising interpretation, really great art.
Christian Ward: This is probably the best Batman #1 issue @Ssnyder1835. As a huge Court of Owls fan, and this is a big word to say, I was giddy with bone-shattering joy when I read issue #1 of Absolute. It’s everything you could want and more.
Jamal Igle: Hey guys, I’ve read #AbsoluteBatman #1 and it’s absolutely (pun intended) amazing! @DCOfficial, @Ssnyder1835 and Nick Dragotta have managed to reimagine Batman in an original and sophisticated way. Gotham comes alive in a different way and this book is amazing!
Cliff Chiang: I knew we were in for a good one with this team, and this film lived up to my expectations in every way. It’s a bold and adventurous reinvention, yet stays true to the core of the character. It’s Batman AF.
Jock: I’ve been watching this issue come together and the final issue is a joy…Scott has put his all into this and Nick’s art is his best yet. Kudos to the whole team! Absolute Batman, coming soon.
Dan Panosian: Thanks to @Ssnyder1835 for sending me a preview copy of @DCOfficial’s Absolute Batman #1. When I finished it, I was already looking forward to the next issue. There’s something very unique about this book.
So go ahead! Fellow comics professionals are rising up in support of ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1!
You can’t see all of the art that was in these tweets because you can no longer embed them, but I imagine the full issue is available to read by now. One thing everyone can say is that Nick Dragotta, along with his art collaborators Frank Martin and Clayton Cowles, have really nailed it with this book.
Another thing that’s very clear from the preview art: Dragotta has his eye on manga, and I expect there’ll be a lot of talk about that when everyone gets their hands on the book.
And of course, there are lots of different covers coming out! Here’s one by Jock.
You may have forgotten that there are other titles in the Absolute series, including Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, and Jordie Bellaire. I’m really looking forward to this book, and here’s the alternate cover by Dan Panosian:
It looks great! But I’m looking forward to a longer review.
