Today, Sony gave its first look at what it’s planning to celebrate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, and it looks like the PS5 Pro will likely be part of it. Hidden in the marketing materials is what appears to be an image of a rumored upgrade to the current-gen PS5 console. Zooming in between the “S” in the PlayStation logo and the “3” for 30th anniversary, we see a PS5-like console that doesn’t match the look of any PlayStation product, past or present.
This is obviously not an official announcement or confirmation of the PS5 Pro, so we’re not anywhere close to definitive news regarding the launch of the new hardware, but it’s hard to ignore that the silhouette of the chunky console looks very similar to renders of the PS5 Pro that were leaked in late August, with the two images showing a very similar appearance, both in size and with the three lines running across its body.
Digging deeper, PlayStation’s actual 30th anniversary is December 3rd, which to me seems like the perfect day to start selling a powerful new console. This date also lines up nicely with rumors from earlier this year that a PS5 Pro version would be released in time for holiday shopping.
Besides the speculation surrounding the PS5 Pro, Sony has officially released some news about how it will celebrate its 30th anniversary. Between October and January, the company will be releasing some digital soundtracks from God of War, God of War II, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Twisted Metal, Starhawk, and Unit 13 games for the first time on Spotify. There will also be special events targeted at players who are new to the Gran Turismo series, and a very cute toy collection called “Shapes of Play” inspired by the colors and shapes of the PlayStation console. And the hub area for the upcoming “Astro Bot” will have a small stage for 30th anniversary photo shoots, which looks very cool.
