DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1 Review

When I was reading DC X Sonic the Hedgehog #1, I thought, as I said, I was continuing to race through my head. “How does this work?” DC Comics and Sonic are clearly not used to crossovers, but we can see that the two pairings (especially when it comes to certain characters) bring about a zippy read with an attractive hook.

That hook does not include anything other than Darkseid, which infringes Sonic’s dimensions to exploit the power of Chaos Emeralds. But there is not one evil new God. He turns out the entire Justice League has continued! The league soon meets Sonic and his friends, and plans to stop Darkseid from getting his Emerald, forming a fast friendship.

DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1 is courtesy of Ian Flynn and Adam Bryce Thomas. The duo was part of bringing Sonic’s comic book adventures to life during the Archie Comics era and IDW’s current hedgehog comics. So Sonic fans should not worry about the visuals and features of Sonic and his friends. The comic is fully done in Sonic’s world, so Thomas can expect to draw a cool image of Sonic’s zipping with vast landscapes and Flynn.

DC

What’s surprising is how well the Justice League fits in the world of Sonic. Thomas’ approach to DC SuperTeam is pretty close to the look of the DC Rebirth era, but it still touches on the fluid movements inherent in Sonic Comics. Darkseid and his minions remain rather terrifying, with the Lord of Apocolip being shrouded in darkness except for his burning red eyes. That vision is only eaten up by Laguna Rock, a giant space station carrying Darkseid’s face and eye beams that cover the red pages thanks to Matt Harms.

The true joy is watching Justice League interact with Sonic’s friends. Again, I’m amazed at how well it works. Tail and Cyborg Bond over inventions, Wonder Woman is a fan of Amy Rose’s flying car (and Amy is shocked to learn that the Amazon princess has an invisible jet), while Knuckles approves Superman’s strength. Flynn’s dialogue pops out the most every time Batman and Shadow share the screen. The Dark Knight and the Ultimate Lifeform have surprisingly moving moments that bond with losses from the past. This is only consistent by attempting one flash with each other in terms of sonic and speed. After all, if you didn’t abandon the question of who is alive, is it really a DC/Sonic crossover?

DC

Perhaps my favorite part of DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1 is the page that introduces Team Sonic members as one of the Justice League. Each of these has a simple panel featuring one of the pairings, but it feels like it’s constantly moving, fitting the way Sonic’s world works and the urgency of our heroes stopping Darkseid. Thomas does an amazing job of conveying different representations and power sets, but Harms’ colours are vibrant or balanced depending on the character on the front line.

DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1 is a great start to a crossover that works unexpectedly well. Since Ultraman X Avengers, I have not read this fun, this action packed in, or this amazing crossover. DC fans and Sonic fans will need to race at the comic shop to pick up this.

‘dc x sonic the hedgehog’ #1 works much better than expected

Flynn and Thomas bring Sonic’s expertise to the table as they are set in the Sonic world.

The Justice League has a simple yet dynamic look that suits the world of Sonic.

Some amazing character dynamics on display, especially using Shadow and Batman.
