DC Comics added a new statue to the city of Burbank today as Jon Stewart was officially put on display. The design for the over 600-pound Green Lantern statue was inspired by acclaimed Washington, D.C., artist Jamal Campbell and created by American Fine Arts Foundry and Fabrication in Burbank. . Burbank Deputy Mayor Nikki Perez, D.C. president, publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee, D.C. authors Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton and Tim Sheridan were among those in attendance.
“John Stewart represents a significant milestone in DC’s history as the first superhero to wear a modern black costume, making his first appearance in Green Lantern #87, October 1971. ,” Lee said. “For writer Dennis O’Neill and artist Neal Adams, creating a character like Jon Stewart was nothing short of visionary, as he avoided many of the usual conventions when it comes to superheroes. “In his role as Green Lantern, he wore a mask to hide who he was. He’s John Stewart,” Lee said.
The statue is the third to be erected in Burbank, starting with Batman in 2020 and followed by Wonder Woman in 2023.
To celebrate the city’s newest statue, Visit Burbank also features writing by John Ridley and Charlotte Fullerton McDuffie, art by Amankay Nahuelpan, Criss Cross, and Jordi Tarragona, and Jamal Campbell. We commissioned the exclusive comic “Green Lantern: John Stewart, Global Guardian” for which we were responsible for the cover art. It will be available.
