Mouth Guard returns in March with Mouth Guard: Dawn of the Black Ax by David Petersen and Gabriel Rodriguez. The first issue will be published on March 19, 2025.

“Writing this Mouthguard lore about the forging of the Black Ax, and doing it at the same time as it is handed over to Bardrick (the first of 11 wielders), with the wonderful Gabriel Rodriguez portraying The Dawn of the Black Ax “It was a thrill to be able to do that,” he said. David Petersen, the creator of the mouthguard. “He goes above and beyond with his inked pages and storytelling, but I just keep coloring and trying to do it justice. I started putting my name forward for this spinoff project. When Gabe was at the top of my list, I put it off for a long time until his schedule was open. I didn’t want to do this first project with anyone else.

So what is “Mouse Guard: Dawn of the Black Ax”?

The origins of the legendary Black Ax are revealed in this prequel story set at the earliest point in the Mouse Guard’s history. Embark on an epic adventure of good and evil with Bardrick, the first mouse wielder and champion of ancient weapons.

“I plan to continue working on the next volume in the main Mouthguard series, ‘The Weasel War of 1149’, but this is a great addition to many other Mouthguard books like this one where you can explore other past users.” We developed Black Ax with exciting and extremely talented collaborators like Gabe, which we hope will be the first of its kind.”

“I’ve been a fan of his work since I first saw his amazing Mouth Guard book. We met and became instant friends,” says Eisner Award-nominated artist Gabriel. Rodriguez said. “Nearly 10 years ago, we began dreaming of collaborating on the story of the first wielder of the mythical Black Ax. That dream has finally come true and we are thrilled to share it with you, our loyal Mouse Guard readers. I am humbled, grateful and excited.”
