Now Dav Pilkey is a common name. The superstar cartoonist is the author and illustrator of the Dog Man, Cat Kid Comics Club and the Captain Underpants series. In March 2002, Pilky released the Adventures of Super Dyper Baby, a spin-off of Captain Underpants. And now, more than 20 years later, Scholastic is releasing a full-color version of Classic Kids Comic.
The full-color version arrives at local comic shops, bookstores and public libraries later in the summer. But today we can see the covers of upcoming releases.
Super Diaper Baby Adventure
The adventures of Super Diaper Baby were originally praised by in-space writers George Beard and Harold Hutchins. Released before Graphix was founded in 2005, Pilkey’s debut graphic novel was an instant bestseller on the overall bestseller list (a combination of children and adult books).
Pilky (along with Tom Spurgeon), who was awarded Beat’s 2019 comics industry figure of the year, said this about the release.
“When I was working on the Captain Underpants book 25 years ago, and before the Dog Man was published, I wrote and drew my first graphic novel, “The Adventures of the Super Dyper Baby.”
“In this book,” continues Pilky. “We included a behind-the-scenes look on how we painted the cover, including early sketches, storyboards and notes about the editing process. In this new edition, now old George and Harold are back to edit misspellings by adding full color.
“More readers are excited to discover one of my favorite superhero characters I’ve created. He may be in small size, but he has a huge impact. My hope is that everywhere children are inspired to continue to write and draw their own original comics and continue to improve without worrying about being perfect.”
Arrived in August 2025
When you arrive at your local comic shop, bookstore, or public library on August 5, 2025, will you pick up a copy of the Super Dyper Baby Full Color Edition adventure? Please make sure to let us know what you’re thinking about the cover in the comments section or the Bluesky page for the beat.
