Hello everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that after much consideration I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAl.
My six and a half years on the OpenAl team have been a special privilege for me, and while there are many people I will be thanking in the coming days, I would like to begin by thanking Sam and Greg for their trust in me to lead the technical organization and their support over the years.
There’s never an ideal time to walk away from something you love, but now feels like the time. Our recent releases of speech synthesis and OpenAl o1 herald a new era in interaction and intelligence. It’s the product of your ingenuity and craftsmanship. We haven’t just built smarter models, we’ve fundamentally changed how AI systems learn and reason about complex problems.
We’ve brought safety research out of the theoretical realm and into real-world applications, creating models that are more robust, aligned, and steerable than ever before. Our work has made cutting-edge AI research intuitive and accessible, and developed technology that adapts and evolves based on everyone’s input. This success is a testament to our great teamwork, and it’s thanks to your talent, dedication, and commitment that OpenAl has risen to the pinnacle of AI innovation.
I am stepping down because I want to create time and space for personal exploration. For now, my primary focus is doing all I can to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining the momentum we have built.
I am forever grateful for the opportunity to assemble and work with this incredible team. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of scientific understanding for the betterment of humankind. Although I am no longer with you in this battle, I will continue to support you.
I am deeply grateful for the friendships made, the victories achieved, and most of all, the challenges we overcame together.
Mira
