Anime fans really have something to look forward to at this year’s New York Comic Con. Newtype, the iconic anime culture magazine published monthly in Japan, has collaborated with Crunchyroll News to publish a special edition issue exclusively available to New York Comic Con attendees. The last time Newtype was available in English was in February 2008, when the magazine ceased publication after nearly six years of publication.
This special issue features a newly drawn illustration of the anime movie “Overlord Sacred Kingdom” on the cover and “Apothecary’s Monogoto” on the back. Overlord: The Holy Realm will premiere in North America on November 8th, while the second season of Apothecary’s Diary will be announced shortly after season 1 concludes in March 2024 and will premiere in 2025. With 16 pages of content, the magazine takes a deep dive into some of the most popular anime coming out in 2024 so far, featuring exclusive art and interviews. This issue features interviews with Naoyuki Ito, the director of “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom,” and Norihiro Naganuma, the director of “A Pharmacist’s Hitorigoto.” Additionally, at the Overlord panel on October 19th, you will receive a signed copy of Ito’s book.
Markus Gerdemann, Crunchyroll’s senior vice president of marketing, explains how influential Newtype magazine was, “expanding the connection[of anime culture]to fans outside of Japan, back when anime was still social.” He pointed out how important the English version is in providing a sense of community for the community. Niche interest is growing around the world. He continued, “This magazine holds such a unique place in the hearts of anime fans, and it’s incredibly special to see it printed in English again in partnership with Crunchyroll News.” ” he said.
