From A Hat in Time to Summer in Mara, cozy games tend to do very well on Kickstarter, and Outbound is the latest game in the cozy genre to have vastly exceeded its Kickstarter funding goal.
With an original funding goal of $33,407, Outbound has raised nearly $200,000 so far on Kickstarter, with nearly two weeks left to raise more. With so much horror content on the indie scene, it’s not surprising that players would want to experience something lighter to balance things out.
Outbound is in development for Windows PC (via Steam) and is currently in development for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PS4, and PS5.
Outbound is a comfortable campervan game where you can explore and build. There is a strong focus on sustainability. The game is set in a near future where humanity has overcome climate change and pollution. Everyone lives a sustainable life. In the released footage, we see wind farms and no coal or oil mining.
Some might call it a solarpunk world, the polar opposite of cyberpunk; a brightly colored, hopeful world. The game has definitely been embraced by the Kickstarter crowd, who helped the game hit all of its stretch goals, meaning players can bring along animal companions on their journey.
Outbound is set to release in January 2026, but if you back it on Kickstarter you’ll get to play the Early Access version in summer 2025. There will also be other perks, including the privilege to design areas in the game and unique skins.
