Composer Dave Malloy has launched a public Kickstarter campaign to record and release a concept album for his new musical, Three Houses.
The musical, which premiered Off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre earlier this year, was written by Malloy (Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812) with musical direction and supervision by longtime collaborator Ol Mathias. After multiple run extensions, the show concluded its Off-Broadway run on June 16.
Malloy wrote the following letter to accompany his campaign:
“Recordings are one of the most important elements of the musical theater tradition,” Malloy wrote in a letter accompanying the campaign. “They are the means by which these shows live on forever — accessible to all, sending the music to audiences around the world and preserving the work of all the incredible artists involved. … The simple economic truth is that theater recordings rarely recoup their costs — they’re too expensive, and the audiences, while enthusiastic and wonderful, are too small. For Broadway productions, commercial producers fund the recordings, which can then be used to promote the show both during the premiere and on tour. But for smaller, more intimate shows, creators usually have to fund it themselves. The actual total budget for the Three Houses album is about $70,000. We’ve got generous commitments for about half of that, but we need to raise the remaining $33,333 on Kickstarter.”
Malloy is offering a variety of perks to supporters, including album downloads, signed posters and sheet music, a special thank you in the album credits and a visit to his recording studio.
This new musical finds three different people quarantined in three different locations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isolated from the world, they are forced to confront their personal demons (and some very ingenious puppets). Annie Tippe, who also directed Signature’s 2019 world premiere of Malloy’s Octet, directed and choreographed the Off-Broadway premiere. Read our review here.
The cast also includes J.D. Morrison (Octet, Iphigenia 2.0) as Beckett, Mia Pak (Saffs, Your Own Personal Exegesis) as Sadie, Margo Seibert (Octet, Rocky) as Susan, Henry Stram (Illusions, Network) as the Grandfather, Scott Stangland (Natasha, Pierre, The Great Comet of 1812, Shucked) as Wolf and Chin Valdes Alan (Home, Felix Staro) as the Grandmother.
The production features scenic design by dots, costume design by Haydee Zelideth, lighting design by Christopher Bowser, sound design by Nick Kourtides, and puppet design and direction by James Ortiz.
