A new Asterix album is still a year away, but the comic (locally known as Bande Dessinée, BD) remains one of the best-selling books in France, with a total of 11 titles on the bestseller list for 2024 It ranks in the top 50 list. According to an annual tally by trade publication Livre Hebdo and analysis firm GfK, the best-selling comic this year was the man-freak title Instinct by Inoxtag, Basile Mononot and Charles Compan (Michel Lafon), which topped the overall top 10. He broke through and reached 7th place. Book chart. In separate BD and manga lists, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece and Mr. Tan’s runaway blockbuster children’s title Motel Adele continued to be strongly represented for another year, each filling multiple spots. Ta.
France is one of the world’s largest comics markets, with BD and manga regularly updating the best-selling book charts. However, compared to recent years, the performance of comics seems to be sluggish. For three years from 2021 to 2023, the comic book ranked first in the top 50 all books. 2023 has been a particularly great year for two comics: the latest Asterix and the first new sequel album to Andre Franquin’s beloved Gaston. The Legaffe series took first and second place. That streak has stopped, but a total of 11 books are still in the top 50 bestsellers in France (coinciding with 2023).

The best-selling comic that year was the French manga Instinct by Inoxtag, Basile Monnot, and Charles Compa. It sold 320,000 copies by the end of the year, and 67,000 copies in the first four days, reportedly making it the strongest manga debut in France. Released on November 21, the title’s success was largely due to the comic debut of French YouTuber Inoxtag (real name Ines Benazuz), who has more than 8.8 million followers on the platform.
Although it didn’t make the top 50 list of bestselling books in France, 2023’s Asterix’s latest album, Lilith Blanc (Asterix and the White Lotus in English), by Fabucaro and Didier Conrad, was one of the top sellers of the year. It became the number one best-selling comic in France. With solid sales until 2024, it managed to break into the top 10 bestsellers in the bande dessinée subcategory. The hugely popular Asterix series is widely available in France and is still available in supermarkets and newsstands.

Mortelle Adèle has been a huge hit series for many years and has proven itself once again with the latest volume Mortelle Adèle vol 21 RecréAction Générale filling the 4th place on the Bande Dessinée Top 10 list, including the top spot. . Other places this series ranked in the BD Top 10 include #5 (Motel Adele sur les traces du crockpot!/”Motel Adele in the Bogeyman’s Tracks”) . #8 (Mortelle Adèle vol 20: J’apocalypsegrave!/”Seriously Apocalyptic”) and #9 (Mortelle Adèle et les reliques du chat-lune/”Mortelle Adèle and the relics of the Moon-Cat”). Debuted in 2012, the gag series by Antoine Doll (also known as Mr. Tan) and artists Miss Prickly and Diane Le Fayet, depicting a mischievous and cynical high school girl, has so far published 21 volumes. , and includes numerous spin-offs, including independent expansion adventures, novels, and branded newsstands. Puzzle magazine. An animated series is also in development. Two of these spin-off adventures (Les Grande Aventures) – …Bogeyman and …Moon-Cat – entered the BD Top 10 alongside the two most recent volumes in the series. Ablaze plans to publish the series in English this year as Rebel Adèle, starting with the first volume of the Grande Aventures spin-off, Rebel Adèle in the Land of Unwriters Tales (the 21-book main series is complete). This is probably the best place to start, as it’s a gag page rather than an adventure).
The first volume of Riyad Sattouf’s new spin-off series Arab of the Future, “Moi, Fadi”, took second place on the BD list. This is a biography about a younger brother who remained with his Syrian father after their parents separated. The first book, based on interviews with his brother, traces the events of Satuf’s series from his brother’s perspective. The original six-book Arab of the Future series was a hit in France and won many awards, including the author’s prestigious Grand Prix at Angoulême 2023. The official title of the spin-off is ‘Moi, Fadi: le frère volé’ (‘I, Fadi: The Stolen Brother’). The first four volumes of Satuf’s series were published by Metropolitan Books between 2015 and 2019, but there is no sign that they will be completed anytime soon.
Third place on the BD list was Manu Larsenette’s acclaimed adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel (published in the US by Abrams ComicArts), which has been enjoyed on both sides of the Atlantic.
New releases of the popular long-running French and Belgian series “Blake & Mortimer” and “Lucky Luke” have ranked in the top 10 best-selling BDs in France. The new volume of Edgar P. Jacobs’ popular mystery adventure series “Blake & Mortimer” always ranks in the top 10 list every time, but this new volume was created by famous French artist Andre Jouillard in the summer of 2024. It was notable for being the last work he painted before his death. Blake & Mortimer Vol 30: Signé Olrik (“Signed Olrik”) by Yves Sente was released posthumously by the artist in October 2024 and ranked #4. The Blake & Mortimer series is available in English from Cinebook, and this latest volume will be available in English later this year. Another familiar title (in 6th place) was The Adventures of Lucky Luke Volume 11 by Akde & Jour, the latest volume in the rebooted mainline Lucky Luke series. The comedic Western adventures of Morris’ signature character, Lucky Luke, are available entirely in English at: The cinebook containing this is now available as Lucky Luke vol 83: Trouble Brewing.
Another consistent bestseller that still ranks in the BD Top 10 two years after its release. It’s Histoire de Jerusalem by Vincent Lemire and Christophe Gaultier, published by Les Arenes. Ranked in 7th place. First published in October 2022, its continued steady sales success is due to a strong public marketing campaign, including large posters on the Paris metro, and the regular appearance of the Israel-Gaza war in the world news cycle. This is thought to be due to the fact that In 2023, it was only in the top 10 of the BD chart, but last year it was in both the top 10 of the comics chart and the top 50 book chart (49th place). It was the 11th best-selling comic on the Book Charts, so it didn’t make it into the top 10 in total. English translation is scheduled for May 2025 from Abrams Comic Arts.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece accounted for half of the list of top 10 French manga in 2024. The latest two volumes and the first three volumes of the French edition of Grenat Publishing were among the best-selling manga in France last year, taking 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 10th place . Perhaps controversially for manga purists, this work took second place behind Inoxtag et al.’s Manfra Instinct. Other manga in the top 10 are the latest volume of Shonen Usual Suspect, Tatsuya Endo’s “Spy×Family” volume 12 (3rd place), and Kohei Horikoshi’s “My Hero Academia” volume 38 (7th place). (No. 3), Akira Toriyama and Toyotaro’s Dragon Ball Super Volume 21 (No. 3) were ranked. 9) – The final volume that Toriyama was involved with before his death in March 2024.
