When I reached the final panel of author Christopher Fenn’s comic book debut, Theron #0, my first thought was, “Huh?”
Don’t get me wrong here. It was far from a negative reaction. I was aware that the digital copy I was sent to review was 28 pages long, so I expected it to last much longer.
And, to tell you the truth, I wanted more.
This issue serves as a prologue to the next series, giving us our first look at Theron’s high-tech utopia. Theron is not exactly a utopia for all its inhabitants, to say the least. We are also introduced to Jezebel, an undercover infiltrator of Theron’s law enforcement organization, Kolob, completing her first mission.
It’s a truly impressive opening salvo of ideas, details, and engaging characters. Fenn and his creative team provided meticulously detailed art from Jay Rollins, expertly stylized letters from Rob Jones, and stories from Kellyanne Brown and Claire Napier, respectively. and edited the script, clearly operating on all cylinders.
It’s a short, sharp jolt of a story, with exposition that knows when to step aside to let the dialogue and action take over. It will definitely make readers want to know more.
Following the story is a page of concept art by Jay Rollins that shows how detailed and purposeful the characters and settings are from a visual standpoint. Theron is a believable place, and thanks to the various design considerations, all its characters fit into it perfectly.
We can’t wait to get back to the dark, colorful and dangerous streets of Theron, with a six-issue series in the works following a Kickstarter campaign scheduled to launch in early 2025.
