Let’s start this review by getting to the heart of the story in Incredible Hulk #425. I was completely baffled by most of it. Because it was full of characters I’d never heard of, and their motivations and interactions were confusing. This is basically an excuse for the Hulk, a pretty smart incarnation at this point, to come face-to-face with something seemingly invincible, with lots of innocent people caught in the crossfire. I might have enjoyed it if I had read the buildup, but well, there’s a very specific reason why I chose to bring up this issue, and this issue alone.
Look at the gorgeous hologram on the cover. I missed the days when comic book gimmicks were at their craziest. Because I stopped reading comics the moment they started getting stupid and pointless. I came back to the world of comics long after these types of events caused the market to collapse, and when comics were starting to refocus on the quality of content rather than how to part with fans’ money. Ta.
Still, I couldn’t resist bringing up this issue. That’s because it looked great. The story isn’t really good, but maybe it’s because I didn’t know what was going on.
I thought that if Marvel was going to sell this issue to forgotten fans who may have been seduced by the cover, they could have made the story a little more digestible, but now, several years later, we have I’m no longer surprised. At that time, the comic market crashed so dramatically.
As a reading experience, it’s not very satisfying. But as a mid-’90s time capsule, it’s totally awesome. Beyond the cover are ads for classic video games, non-classic movies, and a Sega-branded PDA that I would have wanted at the time.
I mean, it’s not a great comic. Still, it’s a nice little trip back in time that you don’t get when reading digital comics and collections. That in itself, trash or not, is worth the price of admission.
