As someone who, like many British comics readers, grew up reading anthology comics on a regular basis, I’d like to see a healthy and sustained (not to mention sustainable) resurgence of this scene. It’s great to see what it looks like. The shelves of mainstream newsagents are lined with numerous British anthologies long limited to the year 2000, its sister title the Judge Dredd megazine, and numerous reprints of outdated American material. Masu.
Now we have no choice. In fact, given the spacing between issues of each publication, fans often have the time and money to pick up each issue as soon as it hits stores.
For example, Time Bomb Comics’ excellent Quantum quickly became a must-read for me. Then Shift was a little late for me to pick them up and read them because my local store had completely discontinued them for some reason.
But it’s great content, and each issue is packed with great material from a star-studded lineup of acclaimed creators. It’s also a really eclectic mix of strips, and you can see an anti-authoritarian bent running through many of the strips. This is not unique to British comics, but it certainly pervades much of the material created and published on these shores.
There are no weak spots here, with a wordless sci-fi/fantasy story and a downbeat Cold War drama, as well as some big sci-fi and one-shots with a twist at the end. .
It’s also worth noting that the format itself is great. Much larger in size than US Comics, Shift is a fun, graphic album-sized piece of work that’s massive, dense, and large enough to let the artwork breathe on each page.
If you haven’t tried Shift out yet, why not pick up the first issue? The publisher seems to have a large selection of back issues, and you can get the first issue directly from here. It’s well worth a try. Even if you don’t enjoy every strip included, you can be sure that the hit rate is higher than the miss rate, regardless of your preference, especially since there seem to be so few strips included. In most cases, play it safe, both in terms of style and content.
