It’s the mid-2000s, but a little different to the time period we know: familiar elements abound (ska remains a stain on a generation’s musical tastes), but it’s also a world where a portal opened decades ago, allowing all sorts of supernatural beings into our world, as well as allowing humans access to a hellish dimension, in case your favourite holiday destination doesn’t appeal to you.
Teenage friends Victor, Miri and Reeves decide to end their summer vacation with a bang by buying a cheap demon summoning kit from a not-so-reliable friend. They succeed, but the demon they summon from the underworld is a real nuisance. Will they be able to coexist with their own demon? With the demon forever bound to their souls, they have little choice…
This is a really fun comic, with a unique premise yet nostalgically familiar. It has beautiful, clean, colorful, expressive artwork by Ray Nadine, and the script (Jordan Alsaka) is full of funny moments that will make you laugh out loud, bringing out the comedy of facing demons that you don’t want to leave but just can’t seem to leave. It’s a fun story told with a light touch, and very easy to read.
The issue climaxes with the caption “The End,” but there have been sequels published since then and I’m excited to read those and see where the story takes our three friends and their demonic allies as it progresses.
