Despite some of the trademark clunkiness that characterized early ’90s comics, The Protectors continues to take a very interesting turn in this third issue.
For example, the government’s readiness to go to great lengths to ensure super teams are taken care of means there’s a very interesting gray area in the morals here.
I could have done without the casual sexism of the witch characters. Her writing style is quite poor. The new Nightmask, the son of the original, continues to be one of the most interesting characters, and definitely one of the best characterized as well.
This series, despite some issues, feels like it’s on track and tackles some interesting handled issues along the way. I’m also getting used to the 90’s art style. I still don’t really like the look of this comic, but it’s not so terrible anymore.
So we’re heading pretty quickly towards a breakthrough issue, and something that made The Protectors infamous. But while I was scared to read all the way to issue #5 given how weak issue #1 was, I now realize that I actually couldn’t see myself getting that far in this somewhat forgotten and underrated superhero series. I’m looking forward to it.
