When lonely hacker Danny finds a discarded pleasure robot named Lani in a trash can, it begins a violent chain of events that breaks her programming, which had learned the most despicable human traits from her previous owner. I did.

To be honest, when Paul Veenstra, creator of Nymphobots, contacted me to draw my attention to his comic, I was hesitant. Especially when you see Global Comix describing it as a “sexy sci-fi actioner.” This first issue can be read for free.

But by its description, and perhaps even by its title, Nymphobot is off-putting. Because it goes far beyond what that somewhat sensational description implies.

The theme of positions of power being abused in a variety of horrifying ways is very prevalent, there’s also some new commentary on nature versus nurture, and some truly shocking sequences of violence.

It’s not subtle by any means, but the story has far more depth and resonance than I originally expected. Artist Breno Braga illustrates Veenstra’s script with an eye-melting procession of highly stylized neon colors and dynamic layouts. Its bright daylight radioactive color scheme is a real treat to the eye.

Given the subject matter, the near-inevitable nudity also doesn’t feel like it’s there for cheap titillation, which is a relief given some of the themes of exploitation and abuse presented throughout.

There are some pretty sympathetic human characters here. Danny is one of them, and a technical cop named Cadence is the other. But the lack of civility among humans in general seems to be a recurring element in this first issue.

All in all, this is very worth reading and an absolute triumph from an aesthetic standpoint. While the almost vulgar title may put you off, don’t let that deter you from checking out Nymphobot, especially since you can check it out for free.

Thanks to Paul Veenstra for providing a copy of Nymphobots #1 for review. Review of issue 2 will follow soon.
