A martial arts fanatic, Mei trains hard to master new moves and is eager to show off her skills. When she and her friends sign up for an open martial arts tournament, Mei’s enthusiasm threatens to get her – and her friends – into some serious trouble.

This is a really fun comic from indie creator M. Jacob Alvarez (who self-published Mae the Master and many other titles under HypnoSpiral Comics) and the writing is packed with great humor, with lovely, unique artwork and a relentlessly fast-paced story that draws you in right away.

There are also a few nifty little cameos in the art – I spotted Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat, for example – and while I won’t give away all of the surprises here, the cast has the diverse looks and exaggerated designs that will be familiar to fans of Capcom’s Street Fighter games (and of course the aforementioned Mortal Kombat).

Though the issue ends abruptly, Alvarez assures us that “it’s going to be serialized like a manga series,” though he acknowledges that since it’s a standalone project, “it’s impossible to keep up with the pace of a manga.”

The debut issue of Mae the Master isn’t available yet, but it will be available at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in Maryland on September 14-15, 2024. Find out more about SPX here.

However, you can still check out the many other titles that M. Jacob Alvarez has written and illustrated for HypnoSpiral Comics.

Thanks to M. Jacob Alvarez for sending me a digital copy of Mae the Master for review.

Did you enjoy reading it? Would you consider supporting my blog? It’s not mandatory of course, but every penny helps keep this site running, as I don’t earn any income from writing here (though I may earn a small commission from affiliate links featured on my pages).

However, we really do appreciate any support you can give, and you can support us easily through either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donation would be truly appreciated and I also appreciate your time to read my articles, so thank you so much!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep this site running and my writing dreams afloat, but please know that I won’t pressure you into anything. I hope you enjoy reading my articles.
