Although it was released in 2000, it’s hard to imagine a comic from the ’90s quite like Magdalena. It’s all extreme art, “mature” content, and of course features a badass heroine who goes into every deadly encounter with her midriff fully exposed.
Magdalena as a character first appeared in the pages of Darkness. Another very edgy ’90s comic that debuted in the mid-’90s, it was itself a spin-off from another comic, and featured a badass female hero who, at least at first, showed her belly button and was pretty skimpy. I was there. Costume’.
Magdalena has an interesting Chosen-style feel to it, with the character here being just the latest in a long line of women who have held that title, and the religious elements interesting as well. is. As you can see, each Magdalene is a descendant of Mary Magdalene, whose lineage begins with her marriage to Jesus Christ Himself. Each subsequent daughter from the same bloodline inherited Magdalena’s mantle (and power) and was raised from an early age to protect the Catholic Church from supernatural threats.
This particular issue creates a situation where the church itself may not have the best intentions for Magdalena in the present. Vampires and Nazis figure very prominently, but the church still seems to be up to no good.
Given Magdalena’s supposedly naive nature, her costume and the opportunities incorporated into the artwork to show off her (ahem) “assets” seem completely out of place, and the art as a whole seems standard and typical. It has a 90’s vibe. It looks OK, but it’s even more common than it was 25 years ago. Publisher Top Cow had a pronounced house style that didn’t vary much between artists, and it’s very evident here.
Story-wise, it’s thankfully easy to understand for new readers who haven’t seen Magdalena before, but it can feel a bit overstuffed at times, and as with the art. , the writing is also very elaborate, almost noir-like. A style that was popular at the time of publication.
That’s fine, but don’t expect anything earth-shattering. If you’re looking for a Buffy-esque story of a badass female hero, presented in an intentionally “sexy” way, with some interesting moral ambiguity behind her mission, Magdalena is the one for you. Might be worth checking out.
Thank you Southampton Comics. I got this issue of “Magdalena” really cheap.
Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. Wouldn’t it be terrible if you were reading this article on a completely unrelated website like Kickstarter Comic and they were claiming my work as their own? What kind of idiot would do that? would you do that?
Anyway, if you like what you read, check out the original site. Unless you’re already here, in which case thank you.
If you want to support regular, human-generated, original content (never plagiarized or copied from other writers’ efforts), help keep this site running by making a donation Please.
Not only do I not earn any income from my writing here (although I may earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page), but I am also not the only one who has been paid by some lazy, morally bankrupt idiot to do so. It appears that his works have been stolen and reused.
No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.
Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
