Mike Haggar, a former wrestler and current mayor of Metro City, navigates his way through members of the Mad Gear gang on a subway train with the goal of finding his kidnapped daughter, Jessica. Meanwhile, on the ground, Jessica’s boyfriend Cody and his friend Guy are speeding across town, about to run into some unscrupulous cops.
As you would expect from a comic based on the classic and iconic arcade fighting game, Final Fight is relentlessly action-packed from the first panel. The action moves quickly from one unlikely scenario to the next, but fans of the game will love how they travel through the game’s exact stages in the correct order. Additionally, many of the game’s characters appear here as well. It’s clear that writer Matt Moylan knows a lot about Final Fight, as does artist Matt Weldon, who beautifully recreates the video game’s characters and settings. Although very different from the usual fake anime style that UDON is known for, Weldon’s more realistic and gritty style is perfect for this subject matter.
This issue also has some pretty cool tricks up its sleeve. This is a trick I didn’t expect at all. All actions are expanded horizontally and across a 90-degree double-page spread. Check out this familiar scene from the game as a giant splash page style sequence.
It’s great, and there’s little depth to the progression, but who cares when it’s this much fun, or as close to a video game as possible?
Final Fight #2 is absolutely amazing from the first page to the last, with amazing artistry in terms of horizontal issues, and I can’t wait to read the rest.
