Excited to discover a truly hidden and unfairly forgotten comic gem from the ’90s, I decided to use an incredibly cheap #1 issue from the time to explain the concept of “judge a book by its cover.” I decided to take it further.
I was most surprised by Acclaim Comics’ excellent Troublemakers series. And I wanted to check out more of their titles from around the same time.
However, when it came to Eternal Warriors: Time and Treachery #1, it appears that the strategy of buying based on the cover before looking into it further backfired.
The synopsis of this manga is as follows. A supposed immortal is murdered and a young man named Archer is hired to help find the killer.
Sounds easy, right? In fact, it’s something else entirely. Everything feels like it’s being explained away by constructing a grand mythology, but the whole thing is bafflingly esoteric and poorly told. I had no idea who Archer was (one half of the famous comic duo Archer and Armstrong), so his introduction seemed to come out of nowhere and his involvement made little sense to me. There wasn’t.
While not as weird and incoherent as Raver of Malibu #1, I had no idea what was going on in “Eternal Champions: Time and Treachery #1.” We do not investigate future issues. This problem confused me terribly. And I’m not convinced that future issues will suddenly make me interested in that complex story.
