An obscure and forgotten superhero from the 1950s, The Avenger was the alter-ego of wealthy scientist Roger Wright, who fought crime in a costume with the help of his own inventions, including the high-tech Starjet aircraft he built.

It only lasted four issues, but indie publisher Renovations Press is bringing the hero back to life, reimagining the Avenger for the 21st century.

In this first issue, the granddaughter of the late Martin Roberts (aka Booker), the journalist (don’t call him Sidekick) who chronicled many of the Avenger’s adventures, receives some important posthumous information and inspiration from her grandfather.

Starring Ricca Roberts, the film sees you experience one of The Avengers’ classic adventures, where a communist terrorist attack turns out to be more than meets the eye.

This one has some really interesting stuff going on, and a lot of really interesting twists and turns. There are a lot of twists in the story that make it feel fresh. If written the wrong way, it could have been a lazy homage to the Golden Age. Writer Len Michalovich has done a great job of recreating a classic feel to a comic book adventure, cleverly subverting it rather than relying on 1950s tropes.

Featuring modern scenes by Mano Ardal and flashbacks by Phil Miller, the film strikes a perfect balance between realism and fantasy, with both time periods depicted in exquisite detail.

It all leads to a really intriguing and unexpected climax and cliffhanger, with some really fascinating details that will make you eager to read issue number two.

Avenger: New Blood #1 is out now and can be purchased digitally or physically from the Lenovations Press website.

Thanks to Len Mihalovich for providing a digital review copy of Avengers: New Blood #1 for review.
