Has Marvel finally gotten the message about continually launching new Alien comic series, issuing new #1 issues, and simply calling them Aliens?
Finally, Alien: Paradiso has a clearly defined entry point into an entirely new mini-series that (at this stage) doesn’t seem to tie in with previous Marvel Alien comics. Not that it’s bad per se (although it was a little weak at first), but it was hard to know where to start and what to read first.
Either way, Paradiso is a great jumping off point. It takes place on a billionaire’s pleasure asteroid where weapons are prohibited. People (including not only families, but also criminals and common assholes) flock to Paradiso for a sunny, fun vacation, but by the time the story begins, things have already gone bad, and the short and sharp It came as a shock. The depiction of gore is followed by a flashback that properly sets the scene.
Two secret colony marshals are sent to Paradiso to destroy a notorious group of smugglers. Smugglers plan to conduct business openly without any risk of bringing in weapons. However, there is a problem with this deal, and soon some very familiar xenomorphs overrun the supposed utopian leisure facility.
I was a little hesitant about Paradiso because the author, Steve Foxe, isn’t someone whose work I’m familiar with. There was no need to worry. This opening issue is great, and the script is beautifully penciled by Edgar Salazar.
Most of the characters are fairly well-sketched in terms of the script, and as things slowly fall into place, such as the family at the resort enjoying the facilities alongside the criminals, some sort of It has the feel of a disaster movie. The setup for introducing the Xenomorph was handled well, and definitely made me want to read the next issue.
