Agent Tarr is the alter ego of Cobra Olympus, a young Iranian woman and super spy who receives a mission briefing in the form of a message from the future. While battling her vampire foes, Cobra attempts to balance her duty to protect the future with her attempts to live a normal life as a young woman in the modern world.
I initially found the dialogue and caption-based exposition in this issue to be a bit clunky, but it seems like this was entirely intentional. Author Bijan Agha tells me that the style of the comic is meant to be an homage to the golden age of comics of the 1930s and 1940s, and it definitely achieves that. While this art style isn’t lacking in some modern touches, it focuses on the characters rather than minimal detail and often monochromatic backgrounds, giving it an old-school comic book simplicity and charm. It also captures the awkwardness.
While it certainly falls prey to its (obviously intentional) clunkiness, this comic also gives a truly admirable level of attention to the diverse nature of its protagonists, and for the sweet, romantic story that’s the focal point. Cobra’s cultural and gender identity is important. Along with more fantastical elements.
It’s really refreshing to see a protagonist with such an underrepresented identity treated as a competent and relatable character. Comics as a medium have come a very long way since the Golden Age tales that The Adventures of Cobra cleverly homaged, but there’s still a long way to go. The studio deserves credit for this push. Here is the envelope.
