The Grunnod are a militaristic people who have enriched themselves by enslaving themselves at the expense of the entire galaxy. But their terrible reign may soon be coming to an end. One of their slaves, Kaisax, survives a thwarted prison escape and stumbles upon a spectacular discovery that forever changes his fate, and the fate of the universe itself.
This first issue of Genecy, written by Gerald Cooper, doesn’t skimp on the spectacle, with events unfolding on a massive, epic scale on almost every page. However, looking at the current state of the universe, it feels like we have fallen into the deep end. Only minimal details are given about who Kaizaxx is and the situation that unfolds around him.
While it’s light on characters and small-scale detail, Genecy nails the aforementioned cosmic spectacle, with art by Eddy Barrows that’s truly impressive, and great coloring by Tim Ogul and Oren Kramer. The work has helped tremendously.
It definitely could have used a little more descriptive detail, and some of the lettering work is dialed up to 11 at times to suit the visuals, sacrificing stylization for clarity in some places. It could have been, but there’s no denying that Genecy #1 is. This is a visual treat and nicely sets up the next problem.
Genecy #1 is available for purchase from Indy Planet. Thanks to Gerald Cooper for providing a digital copy of his comic for review.
